Alf's helicopter

Anyway, Saturday started out really well. Eventually. Helen came over to go to the Presents Galore fair with Mrs Alf at the racecourse. Simon couldn’t make it as his daughter was ill. However, they brought me a birthday present. Now, I happened to see one of these lightweight remote control helicopters on offer in the Sunday Torygraph and this had piqued my interest again as Simon had one last Christmas and it was quite fun to play around with. So that went on my Christmas List and what turns up on Saturday? A remote controlled helicopter.

Things got better when a package from Oz turns up addressed to me. I had been forewarned by the Kiwi to look out for one. It was only Friday that I made some throwaway comment to him about planning to get "UFO" (the 1970s Gerry Anderson series) on DVD if ever I saw the boxsets on offer (as he had emailed to say he was off to finish off watching them) and I get the entire UFO boxset in the post! So, I was feeling pretty chuffed now even if Simes and I weren’t going to get a beer together.

Then the Alf effect kicked in. No.1 Son was already upset when I told him the helicopter was for me not him. But we got it out and started having a play. He kept fiddling with it even when I told him to leave it alone as it was charging. Then, before it got dark, I decided to take TFD for a run on the hill. As I left I told Mrs Alf not to let No.1 Son play around with the helicopter. I get back only to be told immediately that he has broken the helicopter. Oh, FFS! I’ve not had the b*st@rd for 3 hours. No.1 Son is hiding behind the settee at this point. He’d actually managed to break the throttle lever. How, I don’t know. I tried fixing it with polystyrene cement but that wasn’t working. Oh well, I thought, I’ll leave it safely in the study and I can get some Superglue tomorrow and see if that does the job.

On Sunday morning I come down and find the dog chewing something. I take it out his mouth and find it is one of the rotor blades. The model has a main 2-blade rotor and a smaller one linked to it that sits above it. I, of course, hit the roof. He (my son, not TFD) just will not leave things alone and do as he is told. My daughter claims he was “trying to fix it” although as the rotors weren’t broken I have no idea what he was trying to mend.

So, the control box is buggered, the helicopter is probably knackered (I haven’t had the heart to see whether it can fly with just the main blade) and I was in a mood for the rest of the weekend. Welcome to AlfWorld.

The helicopter is back on my Christmas list.

Update
: Tried flying it. It's like a dragonfly on speed. With one wing. The 2 rotors are linked by 2 uprights so without this the main blade is all over the shop. It would look comical if it were someone else's model.

The Kiwi's comment: I can see you're still mired in the grief cycle.
